Review: Bergamot 22 by Le labo

It smelled very good on the paper strip but after spraying on me its potency decreased very quickly.  After about an hour it was hard to smell and four hours in the scent had pretty much vanished unless I put my nose right on my skin.

It has a very clean smell to it. I think this would work well in an office setting.

It has a lot of citrus in it but I didn’t feel like it was that was the general feel.  Reminds me of clean clothes in freshly cut grass.  After wearing it a little bit longer some flowery notes become more prominent.  Maybe the reason I didn’t sense as much citrus as one would imagine is all those notes wear off very quickly, leaving some of the less prominent notes to shine.

Tom Ford Noir de Noir edp

Noir de Noir translates to black of black in French.

I don’t know what that means.

This scent is the opposite of subtle.  Lots of flowers, rose being especially prominent,  vanilla and oud which is very strong in pretty much anything it’s in.

This is unisex but I feel like leans more on the feminine side.  I had a girl I know put some on and I definitely feel like it worked better for her.  It reminds me of the scent older women wear often, very strong and flowery, but not cheap smelling.   I wouldn’t recommend more than two sprays maximum with this or you’re going to be overpowering.

It stays strong for a while but after four hours in the smell will still there but it’s about 1/5 as powerful, this might be the time for an extra spray or two.

Review: Santal 33 by Le Labo

I was listened to the Bobby Lee podcast and in one of the episodes they mentioned this cologne.  Someone on the show commented on how good it smelled which made me curious and I decided to check it out.

Right after putting it on I was put off by it.  It reminded me of Raid bug spray.  This definitely isn’t for me, but I looked through some of the other reviews and most people really seemed to like it.  There was a definite minority of people, about 1 in 5 that hated it.  It appears I’m in that minority.  I did ask a girl I knew what she thought of it and she said she really liked it.

That brings up an interesting question, could one wear a scent they don’t like if a significant other or most people love it?  That’s something to think about a different time.

After the main smell mellowed a bit more some other more subtle notes start coming through and give it some more complexity.  Lots of woody notes are listed but I didn’t find them that pronounced.   I think Cypriol or Papyrus is what really stand out to me, which I’m not a fan of it seems.

After a couple of hours the smell is still strong, a bit more mellow but not by much.  In fact pretty much for the rest of the day it didn’t wear off.  If you do enjoy this fragrance, it’s longevity is a big plus.

Review: Rose 31 by Le Labo

The name says it all, it smells just like roses.  It smells better on my skin than it did on the sample stick.  If you like the smell of roses you will like this.  I feel like a man or a woman could get away with wearing this.  I think there is a subtle wood note in there that makes it a bit more appropriate for a male, but again, it’s mainly just the smell of rose.

The initial strength of the fragrance isn’t too powerful and  after a couple of hours the strength is way down to perhaps a quarters of it’s original strength.  Might be appropriate for a dinner date, but make sure you spray it on right before you walk out the door.

I don’t think I would wear it again, the scent is a little too subtle and doesn’t last too long, but if you love the smell of rose, you’ll definitely love this.  I do like the fact that they are taking something not considered normally masculine and making it work for a male.

Creed Aventus

This is one smells like magic.  Very masculine, and addictive, you just want to keep smelling it.

You’re going to pay the price for such a good scent though, it’s going to be more than $300.  This may be out of people’s budget, but if I was only going to own one cologne it might be this one.

The only downside I can think of for this is it is the best seller for Creed, at least at one location I asked.  But at the price point, you don’t run into people wearing it so often it should be a problem.

It has a combination of fruits, flowers, woods, musk, moss and others.  They blend together so well it’s hard to make out the specific notes.  It creates a new unique smell.

Joop! Homme

Joop! is probably the most unique scent I have come across. It’s very fruity and flowery. The flowery notes are tropical, deeper thick smells, and there is a warmth behind all that brought in by sandalwood and cinnamon.

This is something you will want to wear outdoors.  It smells great, but indoors it can be too much of a good thing.  This isn’t great for a date, or an office setting.  Concerts, sports events, things of that nature are where you want to wear this.

One warning, the shelf life on this isn’t infinite.  Most of the colognes in my collection you can keep for years and they still smell pretty much the same as when you first got them.  I don’t know the chemistry, but something seems to break down and changes the scent.  It doesn’t become terrible but it loses it’s magic.  I would recommend getting a smaller size bottle for this reason unless you’re the type of person who wears the same scent everyday.

Don’t let that last warning stop you from adding this to your collection however.  It’s something you should have if you’re looking for a diversity of scents in your collection.

Fahrenheit

My girlfriend at the time told me this was one of her favorite colognes.  I went over to the mall to try it on.  I always like to wear a cologne a while before I buy it because it can change overtime, or smell different with my own body chemistry.

After trying it on I walked over to the food court of the mall to try it out and the girl helping me told me how good I smelled.  Right after I finished my meal I went back and bought it right there.

Citrus, wood, leather, musk is what most associate with this, but like most of the cologne I will talk about, it’s very unique and hard to describe  with just those scents.  I would wear this on a date, there is a kind of seductive feeling to it.

Jean Paul Gaultier – Le Male

I try to find scents that are both good and unique and this is high in both categories.  It’s got a sporty smell, but it smells sweeter than most sport scents.

It has a very masculine smell, with mint, vanilla, some citrus with a hint of cinnamon.  It’s not subtle, I would suggest wearing it if you’re planning on doing something outside.  It’s also long lasting, you can pretty much go the whole day and it is still going pretty strong by the end of the day.

My friend’s girlfriend had him buy it as it was her favorite cologne.  This one the first cologne that really left a big impression on me.  It’s probably the scent responsible for getting me really interested in cologne for the first time.
